Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS) was established in 2006 with the aims to enhance the development of international student education in Shanghai and encourage more and more outstanding international students.

Duration of the Scholarship

  • Bachelor’s Degree Program: 4 to 5 years
  • Master’s Degree Programs: 2 to 3 years
  • Doctoral Degree Programs: 3 to 4 years

Financial Coverage in Shanghai Scholarship

As Stated Above Shanghai Government is offering Two Types of ScholarshipsType A (Full Scholarship) & Type B (Partial scholarship)

Type A (Full Scholarship)

  • Exempt From Full Tuition fee.
  • Accommodation on campus
  • Provide comprehensive medical insurance

Monthly Living Expense:

  • Doctoral program: CNY3500
  • Graduate program: CNY3000
  • Undergraduate program: CNY2500

Type B (Partial Scholarship)

Exempt from tuition fee, and provide comprehensive medical insurance.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.
  • Applicants for the pre-college program must have a high school diploma and be under 23.
  • Applicants for the bachelor degree program must have a high school diploma and be under 25.
  • Applicants for the master degree program must have a bachelor degree and be under 35.
  • Applicants for the doctoral degree program must have a master degree and under 40.

For Undergraduate

  2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy)
  3. Academic transcripts (notarized photocopy)
  4. A study or research plan.
  5. Valid HSK certificate
  6. Additional application documents required by the school
  7. Photocopy of the health certificate and blood test. Bring your original documents when entering China.
  8. Photocopy of passport, including all Chinese visa pages.
  9. Certificates of the award in your high school (not mandatory).
  10. Applicants under 18 must provide a Guardian’s Letter of Guarantee. Samples can be downloaded from ECNU undergraduate program website.
  11. Application fee: 800 RMB (paid online).

For Master 

  1. Application Form from http://study.shmec.gov.cn/
  2. Bachelor or higher diploma (notarized photocopy):
  3. Academic transcripts (notarized photocopy)
  4. A study or research plan. It must be in Chinese or in English and no less than 800words.
  5. Valid HSK certificate:
  6. English-taught program: TOEFL ≥ 80,IELTS ≥ 6, or other English language certificates.
  7. Two recommendation letters by professors or associate professors, written in Chinese/English.
  8. Photocopy of health certificate and blood test. Bring your original documents when entering China.
  9. Photocopy of passport, including all Chinese visa pages.
  10. Abstract of bachelor thesis (non-essential)
  11. Application fee: 800 RMB (paid online).

For Doctoral

  • Application Form from http://study.shmec.gov.cn/
  • Bachelor and master graduation certificate and diploma (notarized photocopy):
  • Academic transcripts (notarized photocopy)
  • A study or research plan. It must be in Chinese or in English and no less than 800words.
  • Valid HSK certificate:
  • English-taught program: TOEFL ≥ 80,IELTS ≥ 6, or other English language certificates.
  • Two recommendation letters by professors or associate professors, written in Chinese/English. Follow the reference letter sample.
  • Photocopy of Health certificate and blood test. Bring your original documents when entering China.
  • Photocopy of passport, including all the Chinese visa pages.
  • Abstract of master thesis and other published papers or research products during the master program. No need to provide your full master thesis but only the abstract.
  • Application fee: 800 RMB (paid online).
